odds 'n ends on a rainy day

"Rosy Returns" - repeat blooming daylily

Isn't this a beautiful daylily? I just planted it this spring, so not sure if it will always bloom late. I'm thinking I need to add more late bloomers, so hope it will. It's a smaller daylily bloom, but a lovely rich color.

Japanese fall blooming anemone
Japanese anemone again

I love Japanese anemone. They aren't real showy from a distance, but up close they are very pretty. I love the way they nod in the breeze. I have them in a couple gardens - in light shade and in almost full sun. They seem to be okay everywhere I try them.

A couple more of my smaller dahlias. The colors have been so rich this summer - I love them! The dinnerplates are definitely more showy, but I'm hoping I can overwinter the tubers and have them all again next year. I do have to remember to stake them as I plant them though. This year the ones in partial shade are pretty much laying on the ground.

Turtlehead

Turtlehead is another fall bloomer that I love. The plants get very large and the blooms aren't super showy until you get right up to the plant. But they are so cute! And it keeps blooming for quite a long time. When I first bought turtlehead, it was for a shady space. But mine does much, much better in full sun as long as the ground is moist.

Brown-eyed Susans

And what late-summer/fall post would be complete without brown-eyed susans? I used to think these were too "gold" for my gardens. But now I rely on them to add bright spots throughout my late summer gardens. I can't think of any flowers I don't like, but I do have a soft spot for the prairie-type flowers.

We have had a cool, rainy weekend here. No complaints - we desperately needed the rain. But I do hope it plans to warm up again, so we get more tomatoes. I roasted and froze several batches, but not nearly enough to last the winter!

Kris ~ Your flower pictures are so pretty. We did a late blooming lily post for todays green thumb sunday.

It was cool here all weekend also. We had rain most of the day today.

Please send some rain down here to Georgia! We are so hot and dry.

I love your garden pictures. My thumb is definitely not green.

I like the anemone - very lovely. Your brown-eyed susans look better than mine. :)

Isn't the rain delightful? I would like to harvest a few more tomatoes too...I am sure I had more put away for winter last year than I currently have now.

Brown-eyed susans definitely are a must late in the summer. They just say, "Autumn is coming!" don't they? Love all the photos, Kris. Warm wishes, Cindy at Rosehaven Cottage

Very pretty flowers Kris. I think we've had enough rain for the time being. 5" on Friday, another 3" yesterday and it's been raining this morning! I'm ready for some August heat now.

As usual, Kris, all the flowers are gorgeous, but yeah, I love that daylily.

From your blog I am making a list of flowers I want to plan next year. So keep it up, I'm lovin' it!

Love your photos. I have "happy returns", but this is much prettier. Thanks for commenting. I hadn't known about your blog before. I'm looking forward to browsing your posts. My sister, who is the primary provider of my daylily and hosta collections gardens in Spicer, MN.

I hope that rain is coming my way!

I, too, find the b.e. Susans one of the highlights of the August garden. Mine usually put on a great show. This is the first year that we have ever had such a drought that even the BES wilted right down to the ground.

Your dahlias are all looking great. The ones on my deck are doing nicely, too. Are those all new ones this year?

We've had rain all weekend, finally. And more is promised the whole week. It's been very dark out though and that I'm not fond of.
I really the Japanese anemone. Perfect.

You are so fortunate to be able to grow Japanese Anemones. They are one of my favourite flowers - they bloom over a long period too! Alas, I shall just have to come here to look at them.

Turtlehead is such a cool plant too. Mine didn't overwinter much to my dismay.

Our weather was just like yours. No doubt it was the same system passing through. Today has been alternating between sun and some bits of rain. I am happy that the garden had a thorough soaking this weekend!

That is a gorgeous daylily and all your other shots are wonderful also. The anemone has never done very well for me. I guess I should try it again in different soil!

Your flowers are always so lovely. I have been thinking I need to add some more late summer/early fall things to my gardens as well. I think the anemone would be a good choice for me. There are some really nice varieties out there.

I can't get over it... you're so far north of me, and yet your anemones are already blooming! Mine are stunted height-wise this year because of our drought (and me forgetting about them in their corner until I found them all crispy one day) but I do have a few buds on several. Nowhere near bloomtime for them yet, though, here.

Loved your "susans"! The recent rains have been a God-send to the garden.

I've never seen a turtlehead -- they rather resemble a snapdragon, don't they?

And I wonder if you've ever thought of using your pictures for calenders and greeting cards and the like. They're that pretty.
