Autumn apples

Don't apples make you think "autumn" in a big way? Our friends' daughter has 2 Haralson apple trees in her yard. They have apples, apples, and more apples this year. So they were nice enough to bring me a grocery bag full. I'm guessing when I get through these, I can probably get more! They've been making apple pies and putting them in the freezer - oh, to have a nice big freezer!

As you can see, I have a lovely marble rolling pin that would be perfect for making pie crust - but so far I've resisted the temptation. We found the rolling pin and the marble lazy susan at estate sales last summer. Maybe a nice slice of apple pie with vanilla ice cream would be a perfect treat this weekend. (ooooh - and how about caramel apples? Or apple crisp? All sorts of yummy apple treats come to mind!)

I love apples - just in the hand to eat. But, boy, the thought of apple crisp with vanilla ice cream sounds delish.

I hope you will post the pie recipe if you make it. I have declared that this is the time I will learn to make pie! I have lots of recipes for pie crust but have never taken the plunge.:<)

I think you should combine them... a nice pie with apple crisp topping instead of the regular piecrust. Yum. (I'm all for the best of both worlds!)

My husband always nags me for candied apples. (But I prefer caramel apples!) I'm planting apple trees and sour cherries up at our Montana place next year.

This time of year always reminds me of when my sister used to have three apple trees, and we'd spend a whole day picking and then preserve the juice. Yum. Alas, the juice never lasted past Christmas.

Do you remember when Grandpa and Grandma had all those Apple trees across the road? One of them was a Haralson-----the very best eating all there is----green or ripe!!!!!!!!

There are NO apple trees down here, or cherries. We have enough trouble getting the cool weather needed to set the juice in the oranges and grapefruit. The apples look awfully good........

OOOOOOOOOOOH! In two weeks (late in the season but the only time we could connect) my sister and I will meet in Jordan and go apple picking (she lives near Mankato). We did it last year and the girls had a blast.

Apple pies are my husband's all time favorite.

In answer to your question, my Dad is a preacher's kid - being Dutch and Reformed means the ties lie in the Michigan and Iowa.

When he was in HS my grandfather took a call to a church in Kansas where my Dad met my Mom and where I grew up.

My Dad never completed college so after the oldest us three children were out of the house and the politics of his city job forced him out, he went back to school down in Dodge City, Kansas.

He and Mom decided that after my youngest sister was out of the house they would move to Iowa. My brother, my grandfather, and one of my father's brothers already lived in Pella. Anxious to have my Dad nearer my uncle and my grandfather pulled some strings at Vermeer manufacturing (they design and manufacture heavy equipment).

So about fifteen years ago, my parent's moved to Pella. Since then one of my Dad's other siblings has moved there too (my Dad comes from a family of seven).

Because on can't help wondering about such things - I often think that if something were to happen to Tim, I would move to Pella - I love it there.

Are you sorry you asked the question? :)

I like Iowa because if you lived there you could grow more it is Zone 5 by my parent's. :)

Gardeners are a weird lot. :)

Mmmm, try apple cobbler instead with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. You'll think you've entered heaven. I just did that with peaches I picked up from my favorite orchard.

Love the cutting board!

Thanks everyone!!!! We are enjoying the applies, and you've shared some wonderful ideas for even more enjoyment!

Melissa - no, I'm not sorry I asked the question!!!! A few years ago Mark changed jobs, and I told him the only way I would move is if it were to a better growing zone. So I know what you're saying! lol

I'm still drooling over the peaches you had a while back. Apple crisp sounds so good! With some vanilla ice cream on top.

Mmmmmm...apple crisp. One of my favorites. Except when I make it, my husband eats off all the crunchy parts and not the apples. Alas. I like baked apples too. I cut out the core, leaving some on the bottom, fill with raisins, sprinkle with cinnamon and then fill up the core with maple syrup. Yum.

Yum ... apple pie piping hot with vanilla ice cream melting on the top. That sounds like a fine idea!
